About The Artist
Marcus Oleniuk hails from the tranquil flatlands of the Canadian Prairies but has spent a 30-year career photographing subjects across the globe. In the 1990s, he documented social conflict in New Delhi for major publications including Time, Newsweek, Asiaweek, and The Financial Times. Since moving to Hong Kong, he has completed eleven photography books and numerous long-term projects.
Oleniuk’s work spans a range of subjects, capturing life with precision and a keen observational eye. His black-and-white images are often stark and grainy at first glance, yet reveal depth and subtlety upon closer inspection. His portraits, in particular, reflect a profound understanding of human expression, capturing moments of indifference, resilience, and quiet storytelling.
Between 2012 and 2013, Oleniuk was commissioned to document the St Davids Peninsula in Pembrokeshire, living at the newly restored Roch Castle to explore and photograph the local landscape and residents. The result is Pebidiog, a trilogy of coffee-table books – Tarddiad (Beginning), Teulu (Belonging), and Trigo (Being) – named after the ancient Welsh term for North West Pembrokeshire. The accompanying prose was written by Professor Mererid Hopwood, one of Wales’ most celebrated authors and former Children’s Poet Laureate.
Through his work, Oleniuk observes and interprets the human condition with clarity, patience, and impact, creating images that are both direct and profoundly evocative.
